The S&OP Process at a Glance

Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) balances demand and supply in a continuous cycle—considering product mix, new product introductions, promotions, product life cycles, and inventory. It sets the aggregate production plan to meet the sales plan while hitting profitability, productivity, and lead-time targets, and looks far enough ahead to plan labor, equipment, facilities, materials, and finances.

  • Planning scope: Inventory, demand, promotions, supply, distribution, capacity, and production scheduling.

  • Outcomes: Production rates that shape inventory, backlog, and workforce stability—aligned to the sales/marketing plan.

  • Governance: CEO-sponsored, cross-functional team (Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Product Dev, Finance, Supply Chain, Systems) with support from MPS, forecasting, production & inventory control, and procurement.

  • Scope & structure: Define global vs. regional coverage and product families; limit to ≤12 families with similar/proportional drivers.
